Programme Information Pharmacy Technician (PT 001-008)
The Pharmacy Technician programme provides both technical and practical training which will enable the technician, upon licensure, to function as a competent entry-level assistant to the licensed pharmacist. Many traditional pharmacy functions once performed by pharmacists, are now being performed by pharmacy technicians. The technician has become the key person in ensuring the smooth uninterrupted functioning of traditional pharmacy services.
This programme runs for a 12 month period, and consists of 8 modules, with a total of 720 contact hours, which would generate 60 credits.
The programme provides the student with basic knowledge of, and practice in, pharmacy calculations, drug composition and distribution systems, and preparation of sterile dosage forms.
Students are also trained in anatomy and physiology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacology.
Upon successful completion of this programme, the student will be able to competently perform tasks assigned or delegated by a supervising pharmacist.
During their externships, students are given the opportunity to observe and become part of a pharmacy team.
They would gain hands on practice working alongside pharmacists and other health care professionals, while performing routine tasks, and technical and clerical duties in the systematic operation of the pharmacy.
