Programme Information Electrocardiogram Technician (ECG 701-709)

The ECG Technician is an extremely important member of the health care team. A significant part of the doctor's diagnosis of heart disease is based upon the interpretation of ECG tracings; therefore, the trained and certified ECG Technician is an essential part of the management of patients with heart disease. In keeping with the avoidance and probability of medical errors which can of course be fatal, the programme is especially designed to deal with these phenomena, and seeks to address the degrees of incorrect data resulting from the use of medical equipment and machinery. 

Training Objectives

  •  The programme runs for a 3 month period, and consists of 9 modules, with a total of 760 contact hours, which would generate 48 credits.

  • Technicians will be familiarized with the processes and outcomes of electrocardiograms.

  • They will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the Cardiovascular System, medical terminology, ECG interpretations, and identification of phases of the cardiac cycle.

  • Additionally, they will be taught to interpret the results of an electrocardiogram or other diagnostic test, and acquire skills and abilities in areas such as, emergencies, recognition of normal and abnormal ECG's, proper identification of techniques of patients, and familiarity with the testing, set up, operation and maintenance of different ECG equipment.

Entry Requirements

Academic Requirements:

A minimum of five CXC passes, (General Proficiency) Grades I and II (Grade III accepted from June 1998 onwards)

OR Five GCE O' Level passes, Grades A, B and C (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics.

OR Mature Entry - Subject to an interview
