Programme Information Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA 111-811)

The health care industry offers a variety of interesting career opportunities to graduates of the Medical Administrative Assistant Programme. Students will receive training which emphasizes the administrative and business aspects of managing a medical or dental office. Successful graduates can become an integral part of any health care facility, medical or dental office, as well as qualifying for several entry-level positions such as receptionist, health insurance claims processor, and medical records clerk, which are found in medical and dental offices, hospitals, clinics and insurance companies. 

Training Objectives

  • The programme runs for 9 months, and consists of 8 modules, with a total of 727 contact hours, which would accumulate 32 credits.

  • Students will be assessed throughout the programme based on the five criteria set out in the student evaluation document.

  • MAA students will develop administrative skills through a variety of media, electronic equipment, practice in using computers, and manipulation of various software programmes, which will familiarize them with the automation of a medical office.

  • They will also be trained in people skills, basic finance and accounting relative to a medical office/facility, basics of patient care and processing, some clinical aspects in medical assisting, medical terminology, and health insurance claims.

Upon successful completion of these modules, students participate in an externship under the supervision of qualified physicians, where hands on experience and application of acquired knowledge and skills will be assessed

Entry Requirements

Academic Requirements:

A minimum of five CXC passes, (General Proficiency) Grades I and II (Grade III accepted from June 1998 onwards)

OR Five GCE O' Level passes, Grades A, B and C (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics.

OR Mature Entry - Subject to an interview

The original and copy of CXC certificate/s and other academic achievements/training courses

One Passport-sized photograph

The original and copy of one (1) of the following: National ID, Birth Certificate or Passport.

The original and copy of your Marriage Certificate/affidavit. (If relevant)
